Institute Description

At the beginning of the summer students participating in the KEYS research internships in the biosciences will be prepared to participate in the community of scientists at The University of Arizona. The class meetings of the summer institute are a combination of hands-on and minds-on activities, which include guest speakers, who discuss various aspects of science research or science literacy, laboratory experiences, and discussion of assigned readings. Students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate lab safety with the tools of laboratory science
  2. Demonstrate excellent basic lab skills, including; how to pipette, how to make solutions, how to perform sterile techniques, conduct Electrophoresis with biological dyes, set up PCR and analyze the results of PCR
  3. Discuss recombinant DNA technology and restriction enzyme digest of lambda DNA, as well as transformation of E coli, and PCR
  4. Identify the parts of a scientific paper
  5. Discuss strategies for reading scientific research
  6. Apply their knowledge about scientific papers to one assigned paper
  7. Keep a lab notebook for the week
  8. Identify work ethic and other expectations for the KEYS Internship
  9. Select a date for seminar presentation
During the summer the students meet for a journal club each week to discuss their research and readings. Each student presents to the others once during the summer.

Once an applicant is accepted into The University of Arizona KEYS Research Internship program, the student will be required to read important handouts. This password protected area of the website is for those accepted applicants. They will be instructed to come to this page and download all necessary handouts to begin the internship.
