KEYS Institute Week

At the beginning of the KEYS Research Internship, students are required to attend and participate in an intensive weeklong training institute. During the institute, students develop their science literacy and learn modern laboratory techniques and methods currently being used to solve today’s complex biological problems.

Instruction during the institute is a combination of both hands-on and minds-on activities. This includes guest speakers, who discuss various aspects of science research and how their research interests developed. Other presentations include reading scientific literature, and talks from laboratories related to the topics of the institute.

By the end of the institute students will be able to demonstrate:

  • Use of basic tools and techniques applicable to many types of research labs
  • Strategies for deciphering a scientific research paper
  • Self confidence in a science setting
