Incoming KEYS 2008 Students

KEYS Online Space
This online space provides materials and activities for The University of Arizona KEYS Summer Internships for high school students to learn about Biomedical Research.

KEYS Goal
Institute participants will fully participate in the community of scientists at the University of Arizona during the summer of 2008

Expectations

Each Intern must accomplish the following to receive the stipend:

  • Attendance - No unexcused absences
    • All sessions of the KEYS Training
    • All sessions of the Sub-Specialty Training
    • Successful completion of chemical hygiene training before entering the lab
  • Journal Entries
    • Description of internship overview (due June 20)
    • Completion of Internship Journal assignments each Friday
    • Posting at least once a week to the KEYS forum of your group
  • Participation in weekly journal club Wednesdays
    • Present one article
    • Participate in discussion of articles presented by other interns
    • Active participation in other journal club activities
  • Creation and presentation of poster session on July 18
  • Positive evaluation from Mentor

Readings/Handouts

You can download the handouts or use the hard copies provided during the institute June 9 - 13.

In addition, a textbook, At the Bench (Kathy Barker, 2005), is provided as a loan, from Dr Nadja Anderson, for the internship. Failure to return the book will cause a non-refundable replacement cost ($53.10) to be deducted from the stipend.

Requirements

  • Email is the KEYS official means of communication messages to interns. Please be sure to check your email at least once a day.
  • Please call Thom Melendez about emergencies, absences, and questions.
  • All work is due at the time indicated.
  • You will gain the most by participating in all planned activities and by asking questions.
  • Professional attire is expected in the laboratory environment.
